If I wasn't jotting down silly stories I was writing angsty teen poems (those days, thankfully, are long gone). I traded up to scholarly essays when I was in grad school and then moved to writing as a journalist, then an essayist, and finally (or so I thought) as a novelist.I fell into writing for the stage and screen very unexpectedly and accidentally in 2009. My co-star in Betrayed was one of the producers of the Arab American Comedy Festival and somehow thought I would be good at writing a sketch. After much protestation I relented and wrote a ridiculously long sketch mocking the history of terrorism as filtered through a pop culture lens. Ultimatelty, the festival settled on my American Idol send-up Fallaheen Idol with a mix of my Sonny & Cher sketch Sonni and Chiar. After what I was told was a successful sketch I decided to try my hand at writing a screenplay and then a play. The jump happened rather quickly for me. I found many of peers like what I was writing and where I was going and suggested other avenues of exploration which led me to apply for The Public Theater's 2010 Emergin Writers Group. Imagine my surprise when I got accepted. This diversive parallel career has proven to be a boon for my personal life and my acting career and I can't imagine not sitting down to birth out the next word-child.I feel lucky to be able to draw on different experiences and ideologies. I am focused on and concerned about the breadth of material available to ethnic actors of Middle Eastern and South Asian descent that moves beyond the stereotypical accented characters. I want to create works that take place “over there” as well as “over here” – it’s important to emphasize the stories of the ethnic other as an American removed from their cultural identity. I am also seriously dedicated to exploring and exposing the difficulties and histories of first and second generation Armenians pre- and post-Genocide. There needs to be more forward momentum in creating challenging and socially relevant pieces that are not just political or war-related – there is a growing wave of these works and I want to be a part of that zeitgeist. I believe I bring a unique perspective as a very Americanized second-generation actor and writer who has one foot in modern America and another in a multicultural past that is rich, violent, and rife with dramatic gems.
Plays
The following plays are registered with the Writer's Guild.Forgotten Bread – 5M, 5W – the touching and sometimes humorous journey of a Lost Son trying to discover his family's past and reclaim his identity in this scene cycle of life, death, and survival about the Armenian Genocide using family history, survivor testimonies, and eye witness accounts.2010 William Saroyan Playwriting Prize finalist.Presented in Noor Theatre’s inaugural 2010 HIGHLIGHT series.
